I first saw a Gerstner tool chest about 30 years ago. I’ve wanted one ever since, but could never swing it. Now that I could afford it I finally bought one. And I love it!

Meet the Maker

One Family, One Design, Since 1906

Harry Gerstner was twenty-two, fresh from a four-year woodworking apprenticeship, when he built a tool chest as a side project. It caught on. With a hundred-dollar bonus he started a company — and named it “H. Gerstner & Sons” because it sounded established, though he would go on to raise three daughters and never have a son.

More than a century later the company is still family-owned and still building chests from Harry’s original drawings. Of the twenty-some workshops making wooden tool chests in his day, Gerstner is the only one left. This dark oak chest belongs to the Gerstner International line — built to Harry’s designs in Gerstner’s own overseas factory, in special runs for Garrett Wade, so the Gerstner name comes within reach.

The Clever Part

One Wooden Bar Locks Everything

Most chests this size lock drawer by drawer, or not at all. This one does it with a single, satisfying motion: close and lock the top, and a simple wooden bar drops into place, holding all five drawers shut at once. A nickel latch secures the lid above it.

When you don’t need it, the bar lifts out and stores elsewhere — no hardware to fuss with, nothing to break. It is the kind of quiet, mechanical cleverness that has kept the Gerstner design unchanged for a century: form that followed function so well it never needed to.

Beyond the Workshop

A Tool Chest, a Jewelry Chest, an Heirloom

Five felt-cushioned drawers — two large at 2¼″ deep, three small at 1″ — sort a working machinist’s tools as easily as they cradle a watchmaker’s loupes or a musician’s tiny instrument keys. Lift the top and you find a green velvet-lined compartment with a diamond-shaped mirror, the traditional Gerstner touch that turns a tool box into something you set on a dresser.

Owners tell us the same thing again and again: it makes a remarkable gift, and it tends to get adopted by whoever in the house has small, precious things to keep. At 25 lbs with two carrying handles and rounded corner guards, it moves from bench to desk to bedside without complaint — and outlasts everything you put inside it.

Closing and locking the top activates a clever feature that keeps all the drawers securely locked by means of a simple wooden bar. When the bar is not needed, it can be stored elsewhere. A nickel latch secures the top.
All five drawers measure 19″ long by 8″ wide. The two larger drawers are 2¼″ high; the three smaller drawers are 1″ high. Overall the chest measures 20″ W × 10″ D × 14½″ H and weighs 25 lbs.
The top opens to reveal a green velvet-lined compartment with a diamond-shaped mirror — a traditional Gerstner touch that makes the chest as suited to watches, jewelry, and keepsakes as it is to precision hand tools.
This is the Gerstner International line — built to Harry Gerstner’s original designs in Gerstner’s own overseas factory, in special runs for Garrett Wade. You get the recognizable Gerstner design, stained oak, and felt-lined drawers at a far more accessible price than the American-made solid-hardwood chests built in Dayton, Ohio.
The chest is fully assembled and ready to use. It ships by ground only within the contiguous 48 U.S. states. Two carrying handles and rounded corner guards make it easy to move once it arrives.
