I have wanted one of these for 20 years. I bought the large oak tool box with the dark stain for myself for Christmas. It is beautiful. It is in my room on my dresser — I use it like a valet every day.

Meet the Maker
Harry Gerstner was twenty-two, fresh from a four-year woodworking apprenticeship, when he built a tool chest as a side project. It caught on. With a hundred-dollar bonus he started a company — and named it “H. Gerstner & Sons” because it sounded established, though he would go on to raise three daughters and never have a son.
More than a century later the company is still family-owned and still building chests from Harry’s original drawings. Of the twenty-some workshops making wooden tool chests in his day, Gerstner is the only one left. The dark oak chests in this collection carry that lineage forward — felt-lined, hand-fitted, and made to be the last tool chest you ever buy.
My brother and I were paid a penny apiece to stuff envelopes when we were little kids.
Kim Campbell Brown — Harry Gerstner’s Great-Granddaughter
The Build
This is the biggest chest Gerstner makes that still belongs on a desk, a dresser, or the corner of a workbench. Beneath a deep top compartment — lined edge to edge in dark-brown felt — sit eleven drawers: five full-width and six half-width, each one felt-lined to cushion whatever it holds. Veneer ply drawer boxes ride smoothly in beautifully finished oak.
The new dark oak finish is the reason to look twice. It deepens the grain, warms the chromed hardware, and turns a working tool chest into a piece you’re happy to leave out in the open. Remarkably well made and fully deserving of the Gerstner name, it represents the best of what the Ohio-based company has done for over a century — built here to Harry’s designs as part of the Gerstner International line.
The Details
Five full-width and six half-width drawers, every one lined with rich brown felt that cushions tools, jewelry, watches, or collectibles — and keeps them from sliding as the drawer moves.
The top locks with two included keys. Close it and every drawer locks automatically — one motion secures the whole chest. The All-Loc mechanism is adjustable if it ever needs a tune.
Lift the lid to a 20¼″ × 9¾″ × 3¼″ compartment lined in dark-brown felt — room for larger items the drawers won’t take, kept under the same lock.
By design, the Solutions Chest sits perfectly atop the Dark Oak Rolling Storage Cabinet, now offered in the matching finish. Buy the two together at a special price for a full storage tower.

"I purchased this exact chest in the lighter colored wood for use as a jewelry chest and I LOVE IT!! it’s absolutely perfect! The quality is excellent. Extremely well made and a beautiful piece to have anywhere in your home or work space. It was well worth the investment as it will definitely last for a great many years, and will pass along to my children. And while using it for jewelry may seem unconventional, it’s perfect for this purpose. I would give it10 stars if that was an option!!"
